8 Hours Layover in Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Germany

Travel Guide: Photos, Itinerary & Practical Tips

🌟 Destination Overview

  • Intro: This was my second time visit Frankfurt. My kids and I were on our way to Milan. We had 8 hours of layover in Frankfurt…why not take advantage of it?
  • Who this guide is for: perfect for those who have a few hours of layover at Frankfurt airport and want to take a quick self-tour of the city
  • Purpose of Trip: summer family vacation with kids
  • Travel Companions: my 2 girls
  • Overall Impression: Frankfurt is a city that has history with modern touch. Loved it so much during my first visit that I had bring my kids here.

⏰ Time of Our Travel & Suggested Best Season

  • Month/Season Visited: August, 2026
  • Duration of Stay / Ideal Length: we only spent just about 4 hour-ish, but I’d recommend spending at least a day here
  • Weather Conditions: We got some rain but nothing crazy. Apparently, there was a heat wave right before we got there in August. Wearing closed toe shoes are recommended.

💡 Practical Travel Tips & Essentials

🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements

  • Visa Status: No visa required for USA citizens when we visited

💳 Money & Currency

  • ATMs & Cash: Credit card was accepted everywhere but remember the conversion fee. I got cash out of an ATM inside a bank near Zeil shopping street. I got better rate than airport ATMs
  • Tipping Culture: I just rounded up in the restaurant or cafe where we sat down

🎒 What I Packed

  • Clothing / Footwear: I always carry a hoodie (just in case, also for any flights). But my tshirt was perfect. I would recommend wearing snickers or closed toe shoes for walking though, no sandals
  • Gear: My iPhone 15 Pro and Canon 6D DSLR

🚆 How We Got Around

  • Airport / Train Station Transit: Zeil train station was only about 20 minutes from the airport. We got return group tickets to save money (since we were 3 of us). Buying tickets from the airport booth was very easy and takes credit card

🛡️ Travel Tips & Safety

  • Cultural Etiquette: learning a few German words helps, like how to say Thank you and Hi
  • Safety & Awareness: Frankfurt felt pretty safe. Of course we didn’t spend the night there. But old town is overall safe and friendly.
  • Tips for First-Time Visitors: most of the tourist places are within walking distance. Plan to go slow and spend some extra time in Romerberg square.
  • Travel Mistakes to Avoid: Not buying group train ticket and not buying return tickets

👩‍🌾 Solo Female Travel

  • Safety & Comfort: I have been to a few countries solo, not Frankfurt though. But I would highly recommend this city for any solo travelers. It’s safe, people are friendly, and there are polices everywhere to answer any questions.

🏛️ Culture & History

  • Historical Context: Founded in the 8th century, Frankfurt grew from the crowning site of Holy Roman Emperors into the birthplace of German democracy in 1848. Rebuilt after heavy destruction in World War II, the city is now Europe’s premier financial capital, famed for its striking modern skyline and global transport hub.
  • Must-Visit Sites: Romerberg square

🍽️ Where We Ate and Shopped

🍝 Recommended Food & Restaurants

  • Favorite Dish / Drink: Turkish kabobs
Some kebaps for our lunch in Frankfurt
  • Not So Good Food: I tried their warm apple wine…NOPE, never again
  • Café / Gelateria: try any cafe in Romerberg – for good coffee/drinks and pastries

🛍️ Souvenir & Local Shopping

  • Walking around the old town, we saw tons and tons of small places to buy souvenirs
  • We picked up some teas from a store (very good), some random souvenirs
  • Best place to buy clothes/make up and etc, Zeil shopping street has tons and tons of stores. Most of them are probably brand names (not necessarily expensive ones). A great place to just hang out also

🗓️ Itinerary, Photos & Practical Tips

Places Visited:

  • Zeil Shopping Street: As mentioned above, this is a long stretch of shops with brands names and smaller stores. Very hustling and bustling places to just even hang out. My kids loved this place and did some shopping too 🙂
  • Kaiserdom or Frankfurt Dom: Free entrance and took us 10 minutes to see. Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus) is a historic Gothic church that served as the official crowning site for Holy Roman Emperors between 1562 and 1792. Rebuilt after devastating fires and World War II, its iconic 95-meter red sandstone tower offers sweeping panoramic views across the city’s modern skyline.

Iron Foot Bridge in Frankfurt
  • Iron Foot-Bridge: Only saw it from a distance when walking by the river on our way to Romerberg. On a nice and sunny day, you can go on the bridge and to the other side of the river or just stand on the bridge, take some pictures and enjoy the Main River
  • Romerberg: This was our main highlight. The Römerberg is Frankfurt’s picturesque medieval square, best known for its colorful, half-timbered buildings and the 15th-century Old Town Hall (Römer). As the historic heart of the city’s Old Town, it is an essential first stop to explore local cafes, snap iconic photos, and take in centuries of German history.
Romerberg Square in Frankfurt
  • St. Nicholas Church: Also known as Alte Nikolaikirche is a charming 13th-century medieval church situated directly on the Römerberg square, originally built as a royal chapel for Holy Roman Emperors. Famous for its red sandstone facade and classic carillon chimes, it offers a peaceful, historic atmosphere in the very center of Frankfurt’s Old Town.

💎 Day Trips

📝 My Personal Travel Notes

  • Favorite Experience: sitting down in Romerberg and having hot coffee with pastries
  • What I Learned: how convenient it was to take the train from the airport to city center in 20 minutes. The fact that we saw all these, had food and coffee leisurely was amazing.

💭 My Final Verdict

  • What Made This Trip Special: I have been to Frankfurt before, but showing this city to my kids (they were very little when we first came) was very special to me. They loved Frankfurt
  • What Disappointed Me: the only disappointment here was me ordering that hot apple wine…argh
  • Who I Recommend This Destination For: I intentionally got this itinerary, so that we’d have this long layover in Frankfurt. We were tired but still manage to tour the city
  • Ideal Length of Stay: at least a day
  • Would I Return?: I DID return for my 2nd visit 🙂 so, there you go!!!

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Although we didn’t spend a night there (not even when I visited the first time), city center and old town have many hotels from all ranges for everyone. Since everything is within walking distance, picking a hotel in those 2 areas would be smart
